Although this backyard was no small yard! Their ceremony was set at the edge of the woods making the most beautiful backdrop for their birch arch.

Their day started off with nerves that quickly turned to laughter when the groom met his best man instead of his bride during a First Look! After a sweet and beautiful ceremony, the laughs and fun carried through to the dance floor as everyone celebrated Katie and Jerry’s day of love. Their dinner was set under trees draped in fairy lights making the most magical setting during sun set.

I absolutely loved the decor and the atmosphere couldn’t have been anymore relaxing. I was blown away at not just the beauty of the dessert table but all the incredible treats it included! I tried a mini apple pie, it was delicious!

This was a fun group and it was an absolute honor to be a part of.
Enjoy this peek into Katie and Jerry's magical day!

Booking A Session | Sparta Wisconsin Photographer Booking A Session With Manda Mae Photography

The process of booking and planning a session is simple!

First, we discuss what type of session you are interested in booking. Every session is unique in that it may require different location, set up, preparation and timing. Availability can change quickly as well! Depending on your needs, we plan a time that would be good fit for everyone.
If your session will be indoors, we can usually plan for any time of day, or whenever works best, especially with little ones. Often times we will schedule your session around naptimes so we have happy littles while we are together.

Location is important for several reasons! First, we want a place that isn't full of distractions or too many people. If you have a specific location in mind, be sure to check if a permit is needed to have a session there, some parks have this requirement. You will need to obtain permission before your session.
I am beyond blessed to live in a beautiful valley with plenty of places for us to do your session. Some of the best spots have been right in my yard! Each year we plan to add more places to use for sessions as well! There is nothing better than nature's beauty as a backdrop!
If you need ideas, I have plenty!

As always, when planning an outdoor session, we must keep an eye on the weather! With technology today, we are able to keep a close eye on developing storms and can easily adjust accordingly. Rain isn't always a bad thing though, I've had some fun sessions splashing in the puddles!

Great! Once we have discussed a date and location that works well for us all, I will send you a link to a contract for you to fill out and pay your retainer for the session date. Once complete, you are officially booked! If ever there are any questions, please let me know!

Maggie & Colton | June 5 2021 | Wedding |On A Whim Event Barn Maggie & Colton’s wedding was suddenly put on hold when we were hit with a pandemic last year. Thankfully, it all worked out and we were able to celebrate together this year at On A Whim Event Barn!

Maggie had the sweetest moments leading up to her walk down the aisle. The iris in her bouquet is special to her and her Grandma and fit so perfectly in the center of her bouquet and complimented the soft spring color of her bridesmaids dresses. She then opted for a First Look with her Dad...a moment that always brings me to tears! Colton was keeping cool in the Grooms Suite with a fun group of guys!

It was a warm day but with a nice breeze so celebrations took place outside on the barn deck! The couple danced in the sunset as husband and wife and partied the night away to the musical stylings of Grizzly Entertainment.

Thank you to Maggie and Colton for trusting me to capture your day! Enjoy this peek into their beautiful day!

Wedding Day Checklist | Sparta Wisconsin Photographer Bridal Prep Checklist

I'm all about making your day go as smooth as possible! You are there to celebrate one of the biggest moments in your lives and the last thing you want is to feel like you are forgetting something! I've created a short check list that is just for bridal prep time! No worries, we will go over your entire day in detail, but its important to start your big day off right! I will have you prepare these items in one location so when I arrive, I can get right to work!

Hanging out with the girls
Call me crazy, but I think every moment of your day should be enjoyable and not feel rushed! It goes by so quickly anyway! Having the time to ease into such a big day is very important! It gives me plenty of time to photograph your details beautifully and still be able to capture you and your girls helping each other get ready. This also gives everyone a chance to get comfortable with me being in the room. Getting to hang out with the girls, get to know them and laugh with them is one of my favorite parts of the day, actually! While I'm working on your details, I'm also capturing you share memories with your girls or exchanging gifts, all the sweet moments!

Its the little things
I always recommend to brides that they leave plenty of time for prep. An hour and a half is ideal! This gives me time to photograph all the important items, especially specific things that will be needed once the bride starts to get dressed. Photographing these details are vital to telling your story and are not something you will regret having in your wedding album.

I've created a check list of items that are typically photographed during this time of day.

Dress hanger
Your Wedding Ring
Your Engagement Ring
Grooms Ring
Special Items

Shoes, Veil & Dress
First things first...the most important item...the dress!
The dress you dreamed of, the dress you will marry the man of your dreams in, the dress that your mom cried when she saw you put it on...yeah, its important to photograph! Now, I don't need to tell you to bring your dress, that's not what I'm adding to the check list! Instead I ask that you bring a hanger. Some have specialty hangers made with Mrs or Bride on it but a simple wooden hanger would do just as well. Your gown deserves to be hung on something other than the plastic hanger it came with! Having a pretty hanger with a pretty dress makes such a difference in your photographs! I will always photograph your shoes as well! They are one of the last items you will put on, actually! We will have your bridesmaids help you and this gives a great chance for some beautiful moments to capture.

Next up, RINGS! Have all three of them with YOU!
Your engagement ring and both wedding bands! I love to photograph the rings with other details and having all these items in one location is the perfect chance! After all the bridal prep images are complete, the rings can go back to who needs to them for the ceremony.

Going along the theme, your jewelry. Anything you will be adorning yourself with is important to document. Brides often have items that have been handed down over the years through generations and these items hold great meaning. Photographing these items is an honor!

Bringing it back to photographing items together, often times the bouquet helps pull all your details together with its color scheme. I often will use it to showcase the rings, jewelry or as the background to other items like your shoes! Plus, it gets its very own photoshoot!

Special Items

If there is anything that is special to you and will be incorporated, please let me know! The sentimental items you've tucked into your bouquet or sewn onto the back of a tie, wrote on the bottom of your shoe or that you will carry near your heart, all should be photographed. Adding these images to your completed wedding album truly tell your love story.

Preparation is so important! I am here to help! Ready to chat about details? Contact me today!

Melissa & Andrew | 10-24-2020 Melissa and Andrew chose to exchange their vows surrounded by the bluffs that perfectly displayed the autumn season in all its glory. This was my first time visiting the LaCrosse Country Club! It is a beautiful venue, inside and out and the staff are amazing!
While this year has been less than ideal for wedding planning, Melissa and Andrew sure made the best of it with their closest family and friends at their sides. This couple's entire day was full of laughter! I loved the light and happy air I felt as I photographed Melissa getting ready. Usually a nerve-filled moment with so much going on, Melissa was calm and well organized! This bride was so ready for her big day!
Her bouquet was adorned with not only beautiful fresh flowers but also with flowers from her Mother's original bouquet! Such a great idea!
A Father seeing his little girl all grown up is certainly going to bring tears, but it is an absolute precious moment that I love to photograph, even if my eyes get a little misty too.
Melissa and Andrew's short but sweet ceremony was followed by drinks, dinner and dancing!
We braved the chilly air to capture the beautiful fall setting and were lucky enough to miss out on the snow that hit the area the very next day!
With tacos on the menu, a bib was a must! I loved the small touches that Melissa and Andrew chose to help make their day unique to them!
I've had the pleasure of working with KC Entertainment before and he certainly did not disappoint! The music was perfectly suited for this crowd! Andrew dancing for the garter may have been one of the funniest moments of the evening!
This was, by far, the best way to end my 2020 Wedding Season!
Thank you Melissa and Andrew for allowing me to be a part of your amazing day!
Enjoy this little sneak peek!

Caitlin & Mark | 10-10-2020 |Autumn Wedding Caitlin and Mark not only chose THE most popular date to get married on but they also lucked out with THE most perfect, warm weather for an October wedding! The colors in the valley peaked perfectly with the most beautiful backdrop for their vow exchange, outdoors, at On A Whim Event Barn

I have had the pleasure of working with Caitlin and Mark for the last two years as they planned out every detail to their rustic barn celebration. I absolutely loved the rich colors and amazing decor Caitlin created. The touches of lace and romantic candle lit dinner with tables covered in floral decor where the perfect balance of rustic with the rich beautiful colors. The amount of work that Caitlin put into her floral decor was unbelievable! She made her own bouquets as well!

Guests were seated to the musical styling of guitarist, Christopher Rude, setting the mood perfectly for this sweet couple's nuptials.

Their ceremony, performed by Matrimony Mike, was entertaining, heartfelt and full of meaningful moments. The couple chose a fun tradition to commemorate the day. While some light candles, tie a rope or pour sand, Caitlin and Mark opted for a Whiskey Box. Prior to the ceremony, they had each written a letter to the other, describing the reasons they love each other and their hopes for their future together. With these letters, they place a bottle of whiskey and nail the box shut. The letters were sealed in individual envelopes and they had not see what the other had written. The tradition goes, that should they ever find their marriage facing hardships, they will open this box, sit and drink the whiskey together, then read the letters they wrote to one another to be reminded of the reasons why they chose each other to go on this journey through life. The hope is, however, they they will never have a reason to open this box. And if this is the case, they are to open this box to share and enjoy on their 5th year wedding anniversary, replenish and open on their 10th anniversary, and so on. Some choose to use wine, or to do this every year. I love this tradition!

While not everyone was able to be there, the couple chose to have them attend virtually! They streamed their ceremony for guests to see from far away. The groom was lucky to have his best friend arrive, after not seeing him for 10 years! Its so nice to have the ones you love most supporting you, from near and far, on your big day.

Guests were treated to a delicious meal provided by Premier Catering. Everything was simply amazing! I was even able to enjoy an incredible piece of cake, created by Meringue Bakery and Cafe. Everyone was blown away by just how great everything was!

Joe, from Radio 1 DJ Entertainment, played soft music throughout dinner and entertained us through the night! I always get choked up during the Father-Daughter dance, this time, I was definitely not alone. The entire room was tearing up as the bride and her father danced. Such an incredibly sweet moment! The party continued and everyone had fun, dancing the night away! This was such a fun group!

Thank you to Caitlin and Mark for allowing me to be apart of their day. It was an honor!

Enjoy this sneak peek of Caitlin and Marks amazing day!

Ariel & Mitchell | Highschool Sweethearts

I don't think this day could have been any sweeter!

Ariel and Mitchell, a couple of highschool sweethearts, chose to exchange their vows at the beautiful On A Whim Event Barn. I am blessed to visit this amazing venue often and it always takes my breath away! Oh and the way it just glows at night is simply magical! You'll see at the end of this blog!

It never fails, a first look with a bride and her Dad will always make me tear up. It is such a sweet moment for a father to see his little girl all grown up and about to move onto the next phase in her life. I love capturing these precious moments in time.

There were many moments throughout the day that I noticed Mitchell just staring at his bride. They walked hand in hand as they greeted their guests and just wait until you see the way he looks at her! So much love there!
I had such a fun time with their families as they celebrated! Such a great group!

Thank you to Ariel and Mitchell for allowing me to be a part of your big day!

Preparing for your session is so important! Planning everything out helps makes your images amazing!

A park, a farm, a field, wherever! The location of your session is up to you! Room to run is always great if you have little ones, a place with less distractions is great, so playgrounds are best to avoid if we want to keep their attention!

Have a location that is special to you? Great! If you need ideas, I have plenty! I am also lucky to live in a beautiful valley with fields and woodland! Always remember, the location is never as important at the people that are in your photos! So, don't stress over it at all!

Gone are the days of everyone in a white t-shirt and jeans! Oh the 90s.

Weather is always a factor when planning outdoor sessions! Dressing in layers is not only a great way to create different looks throughout your gallery but it will also help keep your images looking cohesive.
White is best kept for a bride's wedding day. Also, neon colors do not photograph well and often will cast color onto your faces.

It is best to choose only one or two patterns that coordinate (like a plaid, a floral and solids that coordinate with colors in either pattern for everyone else). Pinterest is full of some great combinations if you need inspiration!

Remember to accessorize! Scarves, hats and jackets also make great props! Dress head to toe, yes, even your shoes matter!

Most importantly, be comfortable! Choose clothing you feel confident in and won't look back and think about how much those shoes hurt your feet! We want you to look back and remember the moment, not the misery!

If you are able to, I highly recommend going for that extra pampering for these priceless photographs! Be sure to book your services in advance to be sure you are able to be prepared on the day of your session. Be sure to bring a brush or comb along on windy days and if you have little ones, be sure everyone’s face is clean before we start!

If you have anything you plan to bring along, please let me know! I love to be prepared in every way possible!
If I am able, I will sometimes bring a bench, stool, chair or blanket to use during your session. You are welcome to bring any of these items as well! Especially if they have meaning to you!

Be sure to be on time! Sometimes we will set your session at the best time of day, golden hour! That means that our time, while well planned, is still limited. Sometimes I will have another session immediately following yours and I will not be late for them!

Be sure to eat. Snack. Something! Being hangry during a session is no fun for anyone...especially little ones...and Dads! Bring water if its a hot day! We will be on the move!

If needed, bribes ARE allowed! Although we use them as a last resort and certainly want "clean" treats like marshmallows or fruit snacks. Depending on the age, the promise of a treat after the session is finished is enough to motivate them as well!

We will be having fun! Running, jumping, laughing...all allowed! Smiling, joking and singing is as well! We want to keep it fun and light and show all the love! No need to ask little ones to look at me or tell them to smile...I've got that covered!

If you have any questions about your session, your location or what to wear, just let me know!

Amber & Lance | Summer Wedding Amber & Lance

Amber and Lance were blessed with absolutely beautiful weather for their big day. They were surrounded by people they love, some that traveled from states away. The style of this wedding perfectly reflected this epic love story and I was so honored to get to work with such a fun couple!

Married at The Eagles Club in Sparta, WI, Amber and Lance enjoyed a sunny and 75 day as they exchanged their written vows. It was evident early on that these two families have already become beautifully blended with the parents all sitting together and the groom carrying his new Mother in law down the aisle! The love was in the air everywhere! The traditions and sentiments were huge and had me in tears many times throughout the day.

Some couples will do a First Look, some don't, however Amber had other plans and wanted Lance to wait until she was coming down the aisle before he could see her...instead, they did a First Touch. They held hands and had a sweet moment while Lance was blindfolded.

Cars were a big part of the theme and I just couldn't resit editing some of these images to give that old school feel. By far, once of the most fun parts of the day was doing our shoot with Lance's car!

This was such a great group and the laughter and fun never seemed to stop! I loved all the planning and well organized hard work that Amber and Lance put into their day. Their ideas were so fun to try out! As you'll see, we created some amazing images together and I will forever be grateful to be chosen to be a part of such an epic day! Enjoy!

Ben & Emily | Wedding | St. Patrick's Church Ben and Emily were wed at the beautiful St. Patricks Catholic Church in Sparta, WI on Saturday, January 4th, 2020.

Holding the tears back during this wedding was a hard one for me as I've not only known the bride for 20 years but have watched her grow up and into such an amazing young woman.

While I am one to tear up at weddings, I am always sure to stay focused and capture the moment to the best of my abilities.
It is when I am going through the images and editing that I am often hit with a wave of emotion. These are a few of those moments...
They go by so quickly and yet the memories last forever. Enjoy this peek into Ben and Emily's amazing day!

Ben had the room in tears with his heartfelt gift to his new bride, a box of letters he'd written to her for her to read if she ever needs a reminder of his love for her.

Ben and Emily surrounded themselves with the absolute best group of friends and family! I had such a blast with their wedding party! Everything came together perfectly for this stunning winter wedding!

Sarah & Matt | Wedding | On A Whim Event Barn Sarah and Matt's Wedding at the beautiful, On A Whim, can best be described as VIBRANT! The colors and textures of this wedding were nothing short of amazing!
The first time I met these two, this sweet, lovely couple walked in with shirts that said "Engaged AF" on them and I just knew they'd be so fun!
A love story that begins with a girl putting her phone number into a guy's fanny pack couldn't have been more perfect for these two beautiful souls! They wrote their own vows and had sweet little details sprinkled throughout the day that just brought it all together. The piece of her dress on the back of his tie...their watch gift exchange where the surprise was what they chose to engrave and they just so happened to engrave the same thing for each other...the girls all in their deep colors and textures that all blended just beautifully together!
Instead of a cake the couple celebrated with a "First Scoop" of Culvers topped with Oreo and M&Ms!
A delicious dinner was provided by Southern Smoke and Chrome!
Sarah and Matt surrounded themselves with such a great group of friends and family! This crowd came to party! I don't think I've seen a dance floor so full in a long time! DJ Les from Good Times Entertainment was great, as always!

Jenna & Erik | Wedding | Rustic Occasions

Jenna & Erik

While it was a rainy day for all but a few minutes on Saturday, that didn't stop Jenna & Erik from enjoying what was still an absolutely amazing day!
The stunning bride and her beautiful bridesmaids prepared for the day at Tufts Mansion Bed & Breakfast. I was blown away by this place! I loved every nook and cranny and could have spent hours there!

Jenna opted for a First Look with her Dad and there wasn't a dry eye around! Its always such a sweet moment when Dad sees his little girl all grown up and ready to be given away.
She also gifted him a tie with the sweetest message sewn into the back.

Erik surrounded himself with such a fun group of men! I had so much fun with the guys! They sure knew how to keep a nervous groom smiling!

After the hard part was over, bubble exit was such a fitting moment for the happy couple as they hopped in the grooms car and sped off!
We were also able to capture a few moments outside while at Erik's favorite place, the golf course!
Despite the rain, we had such a fun time capturing this couple and their love! From their sweet succulent favors, so sweetly personalized, to the amazing food and beautiful venue, Jenna & Erik's day couldn't have been more perfect!

Tisha & Nate | Wedding | Trillium Creek Barn This week we traveled up north to the beautiful Trillium Creek Barn in Athens, WI! The private setting of this barn is so peaceful!

Tisha & Nate may have had a bit of rain throughout their day but it sure didn't dampen the mood!
The setting, the people, the amazing food and all their surprises made their day extra special!
While every wedding I attend is always unique in its own way...this one might take the cake! The bride was preceded down the aisle by the boys with nerf darts flying, bubbles floating and candy legos being tossed! Tisha was then escorted down the aisle by her beautiful daughter. All of the kids were also brought up for a blessing of the rings. It was incredibly sweet to see the kids all playing a roll in the ceremony.
Tisha and Nate tied an actual knot during their ceremony to represent their love with a large cross. Every detail that went into their entire day was absolutely amazing! They were also prepared with s'more kits!
The fun continued with the super fun bridal party and the guys with their crazy socks! Yes, I got punched! These guys laughed so much through photos! It sure was a fun time! I loved how everyone danced the night away and the fun just never stopped!
Thank you, Tisha and Nate for allowing me to capture your fun day!

The following vendors were a huge part of Tisha & Nate's day!

Jon & Emilee | Wedding | On A Whim Event Barn Jon & Emilee | On A Whim

Jon and Emilee lucked out with the weather and the rain held off all afternoon for them!
To some, clouds seem gloomy and dull. To a photographer, or anyone with sensitive eyes, clouds are our best friend!

Down to every last detail, everything was absolutely incredible! They even had me create their guest book for them with images from their Engagement Session!

From the beautiful family rings the bride wore around her neck to Jon's ring, that was crafted from his late father's gun. All of it, so heartfelt.
Jon and Emilee surrounded themselves with some amazing family and friends to help them celebrate their love.
Their sweet pup was also dressed to impress!

We were able to capture some beautiful moments...including the amazing moment Jon saw his bride for the first time!

Everything about their day was unique and fun and full of love and laughter! For a fun surprise, just before their first kiss, Jon and Emilee did their secret handshake before sealing the deal!
There was also no forgetting about the very popular, Marvin the donkey! They paid him a visit and treated him to some carrots! So sweet!
They celebrated their night with games and dancing their hearts out! What an amazing day!

Enjoy the beautiful details and moments that were captured at the always beautiful, On A Whim Event Barn.

Thank you, Jon and Emilee, for choosing me to capture your day!

Stacy & Derek | Wedding | Murray's On Main Stacy & Derek

Stacy and Derek were wed at the new Murray's On Main in Tomah, WI on Saturday and I don't think we could have asked for better weather! Not only was it a beautiful day on the outside but it was nothing short of stunning on the inside! Down to the smallest details, all the work that was put into this day was evident! I loved the colors and the theme so much!
Have a peek and some of my favorite moments and details of their amazing day!

Little known fact: A proper twirl requires you stick your tongue out of the side of your mouth. You're welcome. Twirl away!

One of my most favorite moments of a couple's day is when they get to steal a moment all to themselves right after they are announced Mr & Mrs.

Its short and sweet but its always so special.

Stacy and Derek chose a fabulous group of people to help them celebrate their day! We had so much fun hanging out by the water and walking along the trail at a local park. Big groups are always fun and full of hilarious jokes!

Wedding days are also always full of surprises...

Lots of laughter and giggles and gorgeous ladies.

As well as some very handsome, serious men!

Congratulations Stacy and Derek!

Thank you for allowing me to capture such precious moments of your special day!

Melanie & Matt | Summer Wedding Melanie and Matt were blessed with perfect weather for their big day! This loving couple were all smiles and laughter all throughout their day and into the reception. Their fun and unique touches, that even included their sweet pup, were perfectly sprinkled everywhere. The guys with their funny socks and girls with their silly inside jokes that made portraits extra fun and memorable.

They surrounded themselves with such a great group of people that had nothing but love and support for them. I had an absolute blast hanging out with them all day and getting to know their sweet families!

Their vows took place in the gorgeous St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Sparta, WI.
We then headed downtown for some fun portraits with the wedding party and the bride and groom even stole a minute to enjoy a toast to becoming Mr. and Mrs. at the always cozy Cork & Barrel.

The reception, held at the newly renovated Stoney Creek Hotel in Onalaska, Wi was just perfect for Melanie and Matt's celebration! With a slideshow of images to watch while listening to dinner music and chatting about the day, loved ones gathered to enjoy a delicious meal and dance the night away!

I love when a couple dances and has fun! I'm not sure Melanie ever stopped smiling!

Thank you to Melanie and Matt for the honor of capturing these special moments!

Enjoy this preview of their beautiful day!

In-Studio Spring Themed Sessions In-Studio Spring Themed Sessions

Spring is here but its still quite chilly outside so we brought some Spring into the studio!

These Spring Themed sessions are PERFECT for capturing your little ones in their sweet Easter attire, celebrating a birthday or milestone or just for updating your wall portraits!

Hard to believe, but your holiday portraits were nearly 6 months ago! We know how fast kids change and its SO important to capture every moment.

I am lucky enough to have clients that I get to see often and every time I can't believe how much the little ones have grown! Hans was just a newborn when I saw them last spring as they celebrated buying their first home! Just two short years ago I met Huxley for the first time in the NICU. It truly is crazy how fast time flies!
Enjoy this peek at my session with these two adorable little ones!

How sweet are they?! The entire gallery is just adorable!

Print your photos Years ago I would sit with my Grandma and go through hundreds of photographs. She took pictures of everything. Every vacation, every holiday, every time anyone showed up in a costume for Halloween. She even had photos of when her Christmas cactus would bloom. She took pictures. Always. So many.

Not much different from how we are now, really.

Back then, we didn't have digital cameras, cell phones or "the cloud" to store endless amounts of digital pictures on that we would soon forget about. The process was much longer. 24 photos. That's all you got sometimes. Fill a roll, take it to the store, wait a week, pick up your prints. Meanwhile, having no idea if someone blinked or if the lighting was actually bad and oh man if the flash didn't go off, well crap. The anticipation. The excitement of opening that envelope. She had many little sleeve albums to slide each photo into. Getting your photo on Grandma's fridge or into one of her many frames was an honor.

My Grandma was diagnosed with Alzheimer's a few years later. Watching her go through those photos and remember every single person, every single moment, every single place while not remembering where she left her coffee cup was quite bittersweet. Before long, she no longer could remember every single person, every single moment or every single place.

My Grandma has since passed away but has left behind hundreds of photographs for us to look through. So many memories. Boxes full. Photos of how we grew up through her eyes. The places she has been. The people that she loved. The big family group photos. All of us. Right there.

Something I noticed was how many photos my Grandma was in. I can still hear her voice, telling Grandpa to "take a picture".

She was in many, and certain ones stand out. All the memories she wanted to hold on to. All for her to remember.

For us all to remember her

We miss her terribly but are thankful for the photographs. They are as close to a time machine as I think we'll ever get.

Things have sure changed over the years. From the way we capture a simple moment to how we have professional portraits taken. How we take photos and display them. Things aren't so stuffy. There are less pleated pants and more tattered jeans. We capture a moment, not just a pose. We laugh and play and smile because things are funny not forced.

I hope and pray that everyone has a box of photos to go through some day. Make it happen. Holding a photo in your hand is nothing compared to staring at it on a screen. Yes, even just those little 4x6 prints. Get them. Put them on the fridge, send them to Grandma. Print your photos.

Don't think that making everyone gather for a photo is silly. Bother. Capture those moments that are gone before you know it.

I'd love to help you. I really really would.

Erik + Morgan | Country Wedding | Garden Valley Gatherings Erik + Morgan

When I meet a couple, I never know what to expect or what their story will be. I met Erik and Morgan for coffee to discuss weddings plans well over a year ago. In the time since then I've gotten to see a them become parents, plan a wedding and share their love with their family and friends as they commit themselves to one another and became husband and wife. Their day was full of unforgettable moments and the details reflect their personalities to perfection.

In Alma Center, WI, on a gorgeous Saturday, at their beautiful venue, Garden Valley Gatherings we documented the promise he had made to her to not look up until she appeared through the doors and then the moment their son and her Dad walked her down the aisle. As a photographer I may appear focused and only "doing my job" but I assure you, that after getting to spend time with people who share their most intimate emotions of this very important day, the joys and the sorrows, I too have moments that take my breath away.

In the time we spent with them following their ceremony we witnessed them and their amazing family come together with love and support after the sudden and devastating loss of a beloved horse. Honored to be there to unknowingly capture the precious memories of their horse's last moments was something my husband and I will never forget.

Images can tell a story that we might otherwise forget or not know even happened.

They were able to honor their loss and continue on with their celebration of love.

Erik and Morgan surrounded themselves with a great group of people that were full of love and laughter!

Erik and Morgan chose a great DJ that coordinated a large group photo!

Their perfectly country themed wedding suited them well! We had a great time with their family and friends!
I hope you enjoy the peek into Mr. & Mrs. Johnson's first day as husband and wife!

Week 10: Framed Of course I could have taken a photo from a picture frame off my wall and stuck someone, something, anything, in it and snapped a pic. Done.

But that would just be boring. My goal is not to just complete my challenge but to do so creatively.

Framing can help define a subject and it can be done in many ways. I like to use framing most often when I am doing a couples session. I tell them to forget I am there and I snap a photo with some foreground to help frame the shot. As if I'm hiding in the bushes and caught a secret moment. Photographer tricks.

Instead, I hid on the floor from my daughter as she babbled on about her books. Sitting at the dining room table like the big girl she thinks she is. Making the cutest faces anyone has ever seen on a baby girl. Really. I swear.

Week 9: My Every Day I tried to really focus on what I could photograph for "My every day" and the first thing that came to mind was what I think is a daily requirement. At least for me. It warms my soul. It helps me wake up. Its a positive start to my day. Its coffee.

Now some people can drink it black...I'm not a fan. I love some creamer in my cup. Lately, I've been a fan of the Cold Stone flavor. So yummy!

Another thing I like to do every day is see the sunrise. Sometimes its not by choice that I am up at the crack of dawn. I do, however, enjoy a watercolor sky as much as the next person. You will surely see photos of my most favorites posted throughout the year.

So, while there are many different things that make up "my every day" I decided to combine coffee and sunrise since they seem to happen together most often.

Usually, I am holding my warm mug, wrapped in a blanket and listening to the birds as the sun comes up. If I can, I sit out on the deck in the summer. Moments of peace are rare in a house with three kids...I take every chance I get and soak it up. Its how us Moms survive these toddler years. Secrets out.

Week 8: The letter C This week I'm running behind. Its just been one of those months, I guess. Too busy to take the time I need to just explore and enjoy some fresh air with my camera. I used many different objects to create this collage of Cs, both indoor and out. I really wanted to be creative and inspired and search for Cs in nature and blow you all away. Maybe next week I'll get the chance.

Week 7: Yellow Yellow is a beautiful color. It can mean many things. The color of a flower for a dear friend. The warmth of the sun. A sign of what is ahead or to slow down. Yellow is a happy color. It makes me think of spring. Daffodils and dandelions. Bumble bees and ducklings.

So, for this week, one of the gloomiest, bluest weeks yet, for such a happy, warm color to be the topic for my project, I found it a bit challenging.

I searched for something to inspire me, finding random yellow objects to photograph in a different light or a unique angle. I know, given the right amount of focus, time and energy, I could have very well found a more profound subject to shoot. However, I am a mom of three who is home most the week during the daylight hours and had to use what I already had in my house. I photographed bananas, flowers and toys...but for some silly reason, I came back to this crayon. To me it speaks of cute little hands making precious works of art to be hung on the fridge.

This week's submission for Yellow:   I may have taken the easy way out on this one!

Week 6: My Funny Valentines Valentines day is just around the corner already! Watching my littlest man write out Valentines for his teachers and friends always takes me back in time. Seeing the look in my oldest boy's eyes when he talks about buying a special gift for a friend (because he really just has the biggest heart ever) makes me wanna squeeze him so tight. Miss Princess has learned the joy of chocolate (like her Mama) so I can guarantee she will enjoy the holiday too.

Valentines is about enjoying the time we have with the ones we love most. Today, we had some fun trying to capture our funny Valentines...and by "fun" I mean Jon chasing June and putting her back in place over and over and over again.

It was easy to capture our Funny Valentines being funny:

Week 5: Rule of Thirds One of the first things you learn when you delve into the photography world is the Rule of Thirds. Its more of a guideline than an actual rule, but its a good one to follow.

Google definition: The rule of thirds is applied by aligning a subject with the guide lines and their intersection points, placing the horizon on the top or bottom line, or allowing linear features in the image to flow from section to section.

Why is it called The Rule of Thirds?

In the image below are the guide lines that help in following this rule. With some cameras you can have these turned on in-camera so you are able to use them while composing your image. Ideally, you would place your subject where the lines intersect. When composing your image of a horizon, perhaps during a sunset, it is suggested to either place it where the top horizontal line crosses, or the bottom, and not in the middle.

Applying this "rule" can direct the eye towards your subject, help tell the story or for artistic reasons. Once you've learned this rule you will start to notice it everywhere. If you're a photographer, it can take time to practice following this rule when in a rush. Seems as though our instinct is to place our subject in the center.

Of course, this rule is broken plenty of times.

There are more "rules" with more complex ideas and techniques that I'm still learning as well. Its all very interesting to discover and attempt to apply. The way the human eye is attracted to specific placement of subject, color and light, is all very fascinating.

This weeks Rule of Thirds photo:

Not surprisingly, I captured another cute pic of my sweet girl. We spend so much time together and she IS the cutest girl on earth, so naturally I always have my camera ready. This week she discovered that she can climb onto the bottom rung of our stools and reach things on the counter.

Its easy to see how I've applied the rule of thirds in this photo. Not only are her eyes (the main focus) at an intersecting point but the counter top edge also falls along the top line of the grid.

Thanks for following me on my 52 week journey!

Next week: My Funny Valentine

On A Whim Event Barn On a Whim Event Barn is located JUST DOWN THE ROAD from me!

Last year a neighbor I had never met before contacted me to come over to take photos of their family. At their barn. Their wedding, reception and event BARN. That one photoshoot was the start of a wonderful relationship! I was there for their Grand Opening and was just blown away. If you were not able to attend their Grand Opening last year, please check out the photos below as well as those on their facebook page. Photos don't do it justice, however. Every time I walk in the barn it takes my breath away. Everything there is just so gorgeous! Joe and Dawn have put so much love and hard work into making their dream become a reality.
They have become good friends of my family and I am so happy to have finally met the neighbors I never knew I had. I am sharing some photos below. If you have the chance at attending a wedding or any event at On A Whim Event Barn this year, DO IT. Please stop by their site HERE for more information!

Week 4: Hobby Like many, I have several hobbies. You all know my biggest one...drinking wi-...NO, photography, of course. I've loved holding a camera since I was a kid. Finding every single stinkin thing there is to learn or try or do with a camera is more like an obsession at times. Love is definitely the right word for how I feel about this hobby.

Of course I have other hobbies, Candy Crush being pretty high on the list. C'mon, you know you do it too. Faebook, Twitter, those all count?

A hobby I used to enjoy a lot was sewing. I learned a lot during the years that I sewed into the late night hours until I couldn't see straight anymore. The biggest thing I learned through exploring this hobby was that I truly love a challenge. I could sew the same thing over and over until I had it perfected and could whip out a dress in an hour. But, it was the request for an item I've never made before that lit a fire in me. It was exciting to learn something new and then have the power, the drive, the knowledge to create it and know that I could do it again.

Sometimes we choose hobbies that relax us. Like doing thousand piece puzzles. Coloring. Scrapbooking. Paint by number. Journaling.

Sometimes the hobbies we choose change over time. Remember when Sudoku was all the rage?

I've noticed that my oldest son likes to draw, much like I used to at his age. He is very determined and critical. Also, like me.

Art can be very therapeutic. So this weeks photo submission isn't my hobby...but it was at one time...

Week 3: My favorite... My favorite color is green.

My favorite flower is daisy.

My favorite candy is Reese's.

My favorite meal is lasagna.

My favorite dessert is Friday's Brownie Obsession.

My favorite ice cream flavor is vanilla.

My favorite beverage is coffee.

My favorite alcoholic drink is Pink Moscato Wine.

My favorite song is anything that makes me dance.

My favorite sport is football.

My favorite season is Fall.

My favorite time of day is night.

My favorite activity (besides taking photos) is sitting around a campfire.

My favorite show is currently This Is Us.

My favorite movie is Sweet Home Alabama.

My favorite place is the beach.

My favorite game is Clue.

We all have favorites of everything. That's easy to decide. Deciding which one to photograph was the tricky part.

This week, my favorite thing to photograph of my favorite things is...WINE

I had a little bit of wine left over from a night of laughs with friends (seriously, not sure HOW there was any left) so I thought I'd use it to try something new. I couldn't just take a photo of a glass of wine. That's no fun. Plus, its not nearly as challenging. First, I tried getting some photos of drops...

Those were fun, but I really wanted to get a pic of the wine being poured into the glass. I had an idea of what I was going for but knew the hard part would be doing this one handed. I set my camera on a tripod within arms reach and pushed my shutter button while pouring the wine. So.Much.Talent.

Now...of course I can't just snap a single photo...these were the few I got out of about 200. And oh you better believe I made mistakes testing it out...

Ultimately, I didn't get the shot I was going for...(I may need to invest in an assistant next time)...however, I am pleased with what I was able to get...I love the bubbles...

But, now I'm out of wine. Bummer.

Next week: Hobby (Good thing its not drinking wine!)

Week 2: Happiness Is... Deciding on a subject this week was something I really took time to consider. Happiness means something different for everybody.

For some (me), happiness can mean sleeping in on a Saturday morning and having a quiet moment with a hot cup of coffee while your house sleeps. That's my dream happiness. happiness.

Happiness might depend on your age. When you're 18 months old, happiness can mean food. Food makes my daughter so stinkin happy. She discovers something new every day that fascinates her. Kids seem to be happy all the time or for many reasons, not just one. My boys are happy while on their dirt bikes, having a tickle fight or eating cake. Happiness seems to come easy for kids.

As an adult, happiness comes in many forms. Love makes us so crazy happy at times that we act like those twitterpated birds in least in the spring...everybody gets twitterpated in the springtime. Love, money, possessions, family, achievement, winning the lottery. Lots of things make us happy as well. Some only temporarily. Sometimes we think something will make us happy only to find out we were wrong. Being happy as an adult is much more complicated apparently.

Puppies. Now, puppies make everyone happy. They just do. Especially when you're not the one to clean up after them. So.Much.Happiness. (Yes, this is a hint, no, we are not getting a puppy.)

So I took this week to reflect on what makes ME happy. After all, this is my project and with everyone's interpretation of happiness being something different, mine is all I can know for sure. My happiness comes in big and small ways.

Happiness is hearing my kids giggling. Happiness is toasting my favorite bread just right and sipping some delicious coffee as I work on my blog. Happiness is the love of a man. Happiness is sneaking a Reese's when no one is looking. Happiness is support from family and friends when you need it the most. Happiness is a big blanket hot out of the dryer. Happiness is a funny message from a friend when you're having a bad day. Happiness is celebrating a 90th birthday with someone very special. Happiness is living life the way you feel you were meant to. Happiness is freedom.

So to sum up what happiness is in just one photo? Eek. Tough one. So I decided to go with what happiness is to me today. Today...happiness is...

Watching my baby girl touch snow for the very fist time on a 44* day in January...

Week 1: Self Portrait Starting off my 52 week Challenge I thought would be a piece of cake. Usually, after making a New Year's Resolution it takes at least a couple weeks, months even, before you start to struggle. Right? Well, this was hopefully the toughest part of this journey and I am so glad its over. Or at least, I am the boss and say it is. So there. Besides if I don't just do it I'll start to pick this photo apart and start all over and ain't nobody got time for that! At least not me.

Anyone who has met me knows I am not a terribly confident person, although I am working on it. I consider myself an introvert. Getting in front of the camera is a serious challenge for me. I can be quite critical.

Now, the benefit to doing a self portrait is that I am in control. If I don't like it, I try again. I delete it and start over. You know darn well this challenge didn't happen in just one shot! Most won't, because I am crazy like that. No, I really just want to present my best work. To do that, sometimes I need to take multiple shots, try different things, decide what looks best. Kinda part of the whole photographer gig.

I took a few minutes to set up my tripod and adjust my camera settings. I set my self timer and tried a few ideas. Ultimately, I liked the photos the most that portray how I see myself.

With that, I present...

Week 1: Self Portrait

Thank you for following me on my journey.

Week 2: Happiness Is...

Resolutions and Challenges Some people like to kick off the new year with resolutions. High hopes for big changes.

Its not easy. Making a commitment, setting a goal, sticking to it.

I believe that all goals are best met by taking baby steps. So with that, I've decided to start a photography project and get my butt back into blogging. With baby steps.

Some photographers like to jump into what's called a 365 Challenge. This is where you take a photo every day for an entire year. Seems simple enough, right? Well, its not. Deciding what and where to shoot. Planning, set up, gear prep, editing, uploading. I mean...I miss ONE day and BOOM. Failure! I can't live with that sort of pressure. *eyeroll* NO, FOR REAL. I CAN'T. steps. Instead of a 365 Challenge I'm going to set my goals at an attainable level. I've decided to do a 52 Week Challenge.

Now this means I will be following a list of ideas that I found real quick on Pinterest. I didn't even look at it. Just picked it. Pinned it. Decided this is happening.

I may regret this.

I have made this decision based on many reasons. Three of them being Ben, Weston & June. Yes, kids make my life busier. Sometimes its hard to find time for myself. I figure, if I have a full week of being able to plan out my project, I may actually reach my goal.

I know, its just a photography project. But a very important part of being a photographer is being able to grow, learn new things, apply new concepts, create. There is definitely way more to it than picking up a camera and pushing a button. I have always said I love all types of photography and I believe that this challenge will help push me to try new things.

Now, blogging. Oh boy. THAT'S the REAL "challenge", or at least it is for me. For whatever reason I struggle to find what to write about. Or find the time to write about the ideas that happen to pop into my head at 3am (Why 3am? Why?). I realize how silly it all is and that really, I have nothing to lose by putting this out there. I figure that by having a list to follow for each week, I could, at a minimum, share what I was able to photograph for that week. My hope is to be able to share more about why I chose the subject or maybe even some behind the scenes...but I'm making no promises.

So, two of my goals for this year (that I'm willing to make public in hopes it will keep me in check) are to complete a 52 Week Challenge and to blog about it each week. Doable. Totally doable.

This week's challenge? Self Portrait. Really?! Why did I choose this list?! Everyone knows that I love nothing more than to be BEHIND the camera.

My first challenge could very well be my toughest.

Stay tuned...

Holiday Minis Fun This was my first year offering Holiday Mini Sessions and I couldn't be more pleased with the result of these amazing images! I was lucky enough to get to use my Grandpa's dump truck for this set up but then the amazing families I got to meet made it even better! How beautiful are these people?! Don't worry if you missed out! I plan to do this same set up next year as well as another set that I am working on. Huge thank you to my Grandpa for loaning me the truck, my Dad for getting up and running and parking it in my yard and all the amazing families that came out on a chilly day for a fun time!

Photogratherapy I love photography. I know, big surprise. There are just so many avenues to explore in photography and I am fascinated by the techniques that are required to achieve some of the most unique photos. I enjoy it more than my morning cup of that says a lot! Even if I am just sneaking outside for a few minutes to try my hand at the macro world, I find it very therapeutic to work my camera, play with settings, get the look I'm going for by trying a new approach. When I say I love photography, I don't love it like I love pumpkin pie. I love it in a way that I can't live without it. Photogratherapy means I'm willing to run outside to take a peek at the macro world and know that its totally worth soaking my knees in the wet grass for one photo. What a beautiful world we live in.

I love photography. Photography of ALL kinds.

Spring has sprung!  Spring is taking a deep breath of fresh air after a long, stuffy winter.

I love to open all the windows and let the fresh cool air just blow through the entire house, taking with it the winter blues. With not having this ability for months, I am always ill prepared for the papers that fly off the counter and onto the floor. Such is the life of a Mom of three, with counters often a mess. The days are slowly getting longer. The sun is starting to rise more to the north, right through my front window again. I can't help but stare up at the stars at night now that I no longer have to hurry in the house due to the deep freezing temps.

Spring is the time to soak in your surroundings! This morning was a perfect example of that! As I peeked out the window to watch my boys head down the driveway to wait for the bus, I could see what was about to be a beautiful, watercolor sunrise and with the frost on our, now green, grass, I already had the photo in mind that I was hoping to capture. So, in my pajamas, I tiptoe out the door so that our big baby, Jack, doesn't follow me. I start to walk behind the garage looking for the perfect angle when I see the bus coming! I quickly hide to be sure they can't see me, thus avoiding my children from being embarrassed. Crisis avoided. Photo achieved. Good morning, it is!

Keep up with me on Facebook!

Don't Say "Cheese!" Christmas is getting closer! With that comes a lot of opportunities to dress our littles in their cute outfits and snap some pics in front of the tree. All too often these photos don't quite turn out the way we'd hoped. Kids are the toughest to photograph! I've made a list of a few tips to help you out!

-Be patient. Losing your temper is not going to produce a happy, smiling photo you are hoping for. Take a breath and remember its ok to be excited, it is Christmas after all! Now some kids are the opposite and will be shy and need time to relax. Don’t force it, let them warm up and move slowly.

- Get down to their eye-level. When you get down to their level, it is more comfortable for them to look at you versus looking up at you. Also, when you are standing, looking down at them, it will make them look smaller and sometimes disproportional (think big head, little body).  They are also more likely to connect with you when you are at their level.

-Give them something to do, or hold. Kids are busy creatures. Having a “job” for them to do will help them feel like it is important for them to sit still and they are more likely to cooperate for a photo. They could hold a gift or an ornament or sometimes a sibling!

-Let them be in charge. Ask them how they want to do the photo. Sometimes kids have the goofiest ideas that produce the best photos simply because it shows their true character. After all, that’s what we want to remember most about a person, right? Not those forced smiles.

-Don’t say “Cheese!” If anything, say something that will make them laugh! Be silly and get them giggling. True smiles are the best to capture!

-Call me! Ok, you dont have to do this one (Although I highly recommend it...*wink*) but if you would really like a professional photo of the family, let me know!

So snap away! Take a ton of pics and don't be afraid to capture the meltdowns....ahhh memories. They are only little for so long!

Fall has arrived! Are you ready? The colors are starting to show on the trees! Pumpkin spice everything is everywhere! My favorite season has officially arrived! There is just something about the warm colors and sweaters, snuggling and tossing leaves that just makes me feel all cozy inside. Maybe I am reminded of my childhood and the fun of visiting my Aunt Sandy's house and jumping into the largest pile of leaves I had ever seen before. Maybe its the fact that with the cooler temps we have are reminding me that the holidays are just around the corner. For whatever reason, it is certainly the best time of year. A lot of you feel the same way, I know! It is the perfect time to snuggle together, enjoy hot chocolate or take a walk in the woods. Today I want to share with you some of my most favorite fall Family Session photos from over the last few years. I have so many, but here are a few! Enjoy!

I have watched the Bernett Family grow into a fabulous family a four! I just love to see them every year! Its fun to see how much the girls have grown!

The Cernik Family!

Now the Cernik Family is definitley a fun one! We had so many laughs I had a side ache and sore cheeks from all the laughter!

Last year these two were celebrating their 1 year Anniversary!

The Zeps Family also hold a special place in my heart.

The Thurston kids have grown so much! I am wrapping up their 2016 Family Session right now!

I'm guilty. Are you? You guys, I have a confession. I'm guilty. You won't believe this, but....I don't get annual family photos done. *GASP* I know...I KNOW. BUT, I know some of you are guilty of this too. Maybe you think that having annual family photos done is just too much, not necessary, costs a lot, you don't have the time or you think "Oh, I will just have the kids photos taken."...on and on and on with the excuses. Well, I have made these same excuses....and I'm kicking myself for doing it. Hard. AND I'M A PHOTOGRAPHER!

Not having those annual photos to look back on makes me sad now. So incredibly sad. Sadder than I thought possible. You just don't realize how fast your little ones grow up until you are looking at the last family photos you had taken were from four years ago! SO MUCH changes in those 4 years. Babies grow up, grow HAIR, lose teeth, acquire scars and before you know it your first born is within inches of being as tall as you are! Looking back at photos reminds you of that moment in your life. It stops time and captures everyone just as they are, making you want to hop in that photo and be there again when you come across it ten years later. Right now, life may be hectic and sleepless and busy, but some day you will look back and remember these days as the best time of your life.

Don't be a fool like me and have regrets. Make the time and get those photos taken. Share them with loved ones so that they have something to look at when they think of you. I get it, not everyone likes having their photo taken, come see me then! I can honestly tell you, its quite painless and dare I say...FUN! These are moments in your life you should cherish! These are photos your children's children will look at some day! Don't think for a second that these aren't meaningful! It is very important to take the time, breath in the moment, look at where you have made it with your life, fully enjoy it and make a point to remember it. Now, make that appointment, pick out a nice shirt and do this for your loved ones. I will. You really should too. No more regrets.

Bretta & Cole's Engagement Session With candles lit, he got on one knee...

This couple was full of love and giggles as we explored the beautiful Pheasant Ridge Resort during their Engagement Session last weekend. With so many gorgeous views, their love was surrounded by beauty wherever we went. Although the heat and humidity was not our friend, a nice break before finishing up with the magical sunset in the background was well worth the sweat. I wish Bretta and Cole all the luck in their future and as they plan their wedding and their lives together. Thank you both for choosing me to capture this joyous moment in your lives!  Bretta & Cole Bretta & Cole Bretta & Cole Bretta & Cole Bretta & Cole Bretta & Cole Bretta & Cole Bretta & Cole Bretta & Cole Bretta & Cole Bretta & Cole Bretta & Cole Bretta & Cole Bretta & Cole Bretta & Cole Bretta & Cole Bretta & Cole Bretta & Cole Bretta & Cole Bretta & Cole Bretta & Cole Bretta & Cole Bretta & Cole Bretta & Cole Bretta & Cole Bretta & Cole Bretta & Cole Bretta & Cole Bretta & Cole Bretta & Cole Bretta & Cole

Fresh 48-Young Family There is just something about those first hours after a birth. Everyone is in a blissful state, smiles all can almost actually SEE the love floating through the air. This session was proof of that! I was honored to be welcomed into the room just hours after Kaden James made his entry into the world. Proud parents, Jillayne and Andy were beaming with pride and sharing the love with visitors when I arrived. Sweet little Kaden remained relaxed and "chill" the entire time...probably due to being up celebrating his arrival the night before. I was sure to take advantage of his sleepiness and was able to capture all those sweet little baby cute! When big brother Jaxson arrived the room was over filled with adorableness while he peeked at his new little brother. Such precious moments...  YOUNG-FRESH 48 YOUNG-FRESH 48 YOUNG-FRESH 48 YOUNG-FRESH 48 YOUNG-FRESH 48 YOUNG-FRESH 48 YOUNG-FRESH 48 YOUNG-FRESH 48 YOUNG-FRESH 48 YOUNG-FRESH 48 YOUNG-FRESH 48 YOUNG-FRESH 48 YOUNG-FRESH 48 YOUNG-FRESH 48 YOUNG-FRESH 48 YOUNG-FRESH 48 YOUNG-FRESH 48 YOUNG-FRESH 48 YOUNG-FRESH 48 YOUNG-FRESH 48 YOUNG-FRESH 48

Engagement Session/Sarah & Jeremy These two were just meant to be! Becoming friends before blossoming into a beautiful couple who were obviously meant for each other. These two are proof that true love exists. I was able to capture the essence of their love and the humor they find in any situation during their engagement session on her parent's home farm. We were then able to visit the church they will be "taking the leap" in during their intimate ceremony in October of this year. I feel beyond blessed and am so excited to be able to stand by my sister, as her maid of honor and witness their exchange of vows as they enter into this new phase of life. I am thrilled to be welcoming Jeremy into our family, as he seems to have fit right in already! Down to earth, full of dreams for their future, here is a peek at Sarah and Jeremy's session. Enjoy!

Newborn Session What type of Newborn Session is right for you?

When it comes to photography, everyone has their own likes and preferences when it comes to portraying their style. Sometimes it simply comes down to the comfort of your newborn and time constraints. With each type of session I offer baby is my number one priority. No long list of prep rules to follow, no intricate, unnatural posing of baby. We work around what works best for you and baby.
Baby details and the love between family is what I love to capture most.

I offer three different session styles for you to choose from:

Fresh 48, Lifestyle or a Semi-posed Portrait Session

Fresh 48
Fresh 48Manda Mae Photography

This session is done in the hospital or birth center within the first 48 hours of life. Perfect for capturing those very first moments and all the tiny details. More information can be found here. Here is a recent blog post of a Fresh 48 Session!

Lifestyle Session

Newborn Lifestyle SessionManda Mae Photography

In this type of session I capture your newborn in their environment with no special props or lighting. Un-posed, capturing life with a newborn, just as it is. With a very journalistic approach to the session I photograph your newborn in their crib, with special family items, blankets, toys. Shots of mom, dad and siblings interacting is also included. Lifestyle is the perfect type for a fussy baby who likes to move around. Take a peek here at my most recent Newborn Lifestyle Session.

Fresh 48 Fresh 48 Session

I wish I would have had someone there to capture those first moments with my boys when they were born. I did my best but sadly wasn't in hardly any of those photos myself. So many firsts were missed that I wish I was able to look back on. As a new mom, you want to focus on your new little one, rest and not be spending time behind a camera. Those first moments are so very precious.

Something that I've always dreamed of offering are Fresh 48 Sessions. This session is held within 24-48 hours after birth, either in the hospital, birth center or at home. These are lifestyle sessions, so nothing posed. Simply capturing your first moments as a family, relaxed and comfortable.

First bath, meeting family or siblings, being changed by Dad for the first time, snuggling with Mom, tiny toes, nose and ears, all these precious moments will be documented for you to look back on years from now. Babies change so quickly from the time they are born and capturing those firsts is just so special.

Included in a Fresh 48 Session

-Session is done in the hospital, birth center or home within 24-48 hours of birth, during daylight hours.

-Lifestyle session, nothing posed, only using available or natural light, no props or backdrops.

-30 min -1 hour session, no rush

Book your session in advance, then when baby comes, just contact me and we will set a time that works best to come meet your little one.

I offer pre-booking for planned cesareans as well. (Pricing information is HERE.)

Additional Information Regarding your Fresh 48 Session

-Fresh 48 Sessions are offered to those located within a 30 mile radius of Sparta, WI (this includes Black River Falls, Tomah and LaCrosse Hospitals)

-For the safety of your newborn, I stay up to date on my vaccines, including the Pertussis Vaccine.

-Full, non-refundable payment is required to book your session.

Spring Mini Info!
Below you will find all the information you need to know about what I am offering in my Spring Mini Sessions!

Be sure to book your slot as soon as possible! Only 10 slots available! They will fill up fast!

WHAT is a Mini Session?!

A Mini Session is just that, a shortened, discounted version of a typical full session.
A Mini Session is often themed and only allows a specific number of people.
This Mini Session is just for your little ones!

I have one backdrop and minimal props. Perfect for up to 3 siblings ($15/each additional child).

Your Spring Mini Session includes 30 minutes, 1 8x10 print and 5 digital files on cd for $65.
You will also have the opportunity to purchase more prints at a great discount!

This is an AMAZING deal!

WHY do a Mini Session?

If we have never met before, a mini session is a GREAT way to meet me and see me in action! You will also be able to take advantage of a great deal or update those photos of your little ones in their Easter outfits. You can NEVER have too many photos of your kids!

Spring Mini Sessions will be held on Saturday, March 21st and Sunday, March 22nd, from 10am-2pm in my home studio in Cataract.

Directions to the location will be sent to you in your confirmation email.

HOW do you book your session?

Easy! Just email me at or send me a message on facebook and I will ask few questions regarding your session. In order to officially book your session, a non-refundable session fee of $65 must be made to secure your time slot. You will have 3 days to confirm with payment. Once paid, I will send a confirmation email with your booked time slot.

When this is done, you're all set!

Day of Session

I ask that you please, please, PLEASE arrive on time, or even a little early.

Each child is different and some are more comfortable than others, arriving early allows them time to relax a bit.

Upon arrival, you will be asked to review and sign a short contract as well as a model release. Once these are complete, we can begin!

I will do what I do, make them giggle and capture your little ones as they truly are. Whether its shy or outgoing, I will do my best to make their personality shine!

Then what?

Within a few days, I will edit and prepare your photos for an online gallery. From there, you will have one week to preview your photos as well as choose your favorite for your 8x10! Additional prints may also be ordered, just let me know and I will easily add to your order! Within 1 to 2 weeks of ordering, your prints and cd will be available for pick up.

If you would prefer them mailed to you, an additional fee will be required.

When you have your photos on cd you can have them printed as you please. I have a great site you can sign up at and order prints from. I highly recommend Mpix as it best represents the photos I have worked so hard to give you! They are as close to professional quality as you are able to get at commercial prices, they also ship extremely fast!  Their quality far exceeds walmart or walgreens prints.

By printing through my suggested site, you can be assured that your photos will arrive to you as you view them on your screen, this is not a guarantee with other printers.

For the absolute BEST photos, I suggest ordering your prints through me as I do use a professional printing lab.

By purchasing professional prints, your images will be preserved for years to come!

-Your Mini Session will start at your scheduled time slot and will last 30 minutes. It is critical you arrive early or on time, as you will be subject to losing your time slot and deposit if you do not arrive at your scheduled time.

-There is a maximum of 4 individuals allowed at your mini session. If there are additional members, you must schedule a standard session due to time constraints.

-You are allowed 1 outfit per individual, although accessories and props are allowed to change your "look".

-Cancellations must be made within 48 hours, your fee is non-refundable. You are allowed 1 reschedule, which is subject to availability, however this must be done 48 hours prior to your session.

-All payments must be made prior to session.

-Turnaround time for receiving your online gallery is approximately 5 -7 days.

So that is it! I hope I've covered everything there is that goes into a Mini Session!

There is nothing mini about the amount of work that goes into a Mini Session!

Remember, only 10 slots, so be sure to book your time slot early!

Booking A Session Before you book your this!

Now, you wouldn't be here if you weren't already thinking of booking a session. Yay! We are half way to creating a keepsake of this moment in your life!

Peek at my portfolio and ask any questions you have! If you would prefer to set up a face to face consultation, please let me know! Email me at anytime!

We will decide on the perfect time and place for your session. Whether its in your home, outside at a park or in a field, the location will often determine the time. We certainly wouldn't want to book a session in the park when their is another busy or distracting event happening. Just as well, an outdoor session could be postponed due to weather changes. We are in Wisconsin, after all! If you have an idea or a preferred location, let me know! I am most often willing to travel to you! If you would like for me to offer ideas, I have plenty! Remember, if you are wanting to have prints returned to you before a milestone, so you are able to share with family, the date you choose will need to account for processing time.

To book your session, time and place, 50% of your session fee must be paid. Your session will not be booked, set in stone, yours for the taking, until I receive that payment. So remember to be prompt! The easiest way to do this is to pay through paypal. I simply send an invoice through email and you can then pay through your own paypal or with a credit card. A paypal account is NOT required to do this! Of course, cash or check is also accepted. Once this payment is confirmed, that's it! You will be on my schedule! You will have 3 days to book your date & time or it will open up to other potential clients.

Get ready...get set...

Preparing for your session is sometimes stressful. Deciding what to wear or how to coordinate clothing can be tricky! My best advice is to wear what you are comfortable in. Neutral, solid colors work best, as well as having no words or graphics on your clothing. Keep it simple, the less distractions, the better! By following these guidelines the focus will remain where it should be, on you!

The last, but most important part in all of this, is being on time to your session. I ask that all clients try to arrive at least 15 minutes prior to our scheduled session so we can have a little time to get comfortable. I know just how awkward it can be to meet someone for the first time and then have to smile and take direction immediately. Time to get to know each other a bit helps to relax everyone. This is great, especially, for little ones who have never met me or a photographer, for that matter. Having a stranger make funny faces at you with a big ole camera in her hands can be quite intimidating at first! Getting to know the little ones is one of my favorite parts. Each child is unique in their likes and dislikes and each one has something different about them that I might need to learn to help me achieve that natural smile...the smile all parents want to see on their walls! Remember, this session is meant to capture the moment you are in at this time in your life. I ask that you relax and enjoy your time together, have some laughs, tell jokes, watch me be a fool, be just who you are! I will be there to capture your memories!

Easy peasy, lemon squeezy!
I will then zip on home and start editing each photo to my liking. I may even give you a little sneak peek at what I will be delivering to you in a week or so!
I will contact you as soon as your gallery is finished and you can then download and purchase prints. Once ordered, prints ship very quickly! You will have your beautiful photos on your walls and in the hands of your family members in no time!

Have I answered most of your questions in this blog post? If not, let me know!

Be sure to follow me on Facebook to see what I'm up to each day!

Whats the big deal about having my own site? As some of you know, I've been doing photography for a few years already. So, whats the big deal about finally having a website? In short, EVERYTHING!! There are so many benefits to finally having my own site, here are my top 3 reasons!

Reason #1

First up, my work. I'm now able to showcase my portfolio in a more professional setting. I can divide my galleries up to make them easy for clients to navigate and really see what my style is and if I am what they are looking for in a photographer.

Reason #2

Everything a client needs to know is right at their fingertips! I am able to keep all of my contact information in once place with an option for them to email, call or even find my page on facebook. All of my session and pricing information, as well as any deals I am currently running is available for them to read at anytime.

Reason #3

This blog. I have wanted to have a blog for years! I love that I can share a story behind a photo or showcase photography that doesn't necessary fall under the typical portrait photographer's work. I plan to give sneak peeks of sessions and let you know what I'm up to on a regular basis. I like to have fun and try new things and I am thrilled to have you guys along for the ride!

My Love For Photography Taking a photo is not just about pushing a button. Hours and hours of reading, practicing, more reading, more practice, videos, classes and hours more of practice goes into learning all there is to know about when to push that button. Just like a recipe, all the ingredients for the perfect photo must be in place. Miss that one ingredient and it just doesn't come out quite right. I know this, because I am a terrible cook, ask my husband!

I love photography, that is no surprise to anyone. No matter where I go, I always take my camera. Some photographers are very particular about what type of photography they prefer to shoot though. Some are only portrait photographers or only work weddings or prefer to capture the beauty of nature or sports. I, however, am in love with all forms of photography! Candids, nature, portraits, macro...there are so many opportunities to capture a photo of something in a way that no one else has done it before!

Learning the many techniques to perfect a specific photo is very exciting to me! I love the challenge and the absolute rush of adrenaline when I achieve my goals. There is a large portion of technical understanding to "shoot the moon" or to capture the twinkling stars. Knowing what settings to have for freezing the motions of a fast moving object or animal, or how to portray the look of motion in a river, takes time to learn and loads of practice. I am always trying out new ideas and learning how to achieve specific looks in a photograph.

This last summer while I was camping I was determined to capture the stars. I was so thrilled with what I was able to finally do that I did a happy dance! Just yesterday I ran outside and snuck up a hill to see an eagle in the pasture behind my house and I am so glad I did! I was able to get one of my best photos yet of the most beautiful creature on this earth!

Photography for me is such a stress reliever. There is always something new to try, a new way to do things. I can express myself in many ways. Each photo is unique in its own way because I am the one who shot it. Someone else shooting that same subject may have had a completely different take on how it should have been set up, and that's ok! Exploring photography in these ways helps me while I am working with clients. I apply all the skills I've learned to each session to ensure I am getting the exact photo I wanted to achieve. Plus, its so dang fun!

I am always going to be learning and attempting new ideas, then perfecting those new skills. Its a thrill for me! Photography, in all forms, is most definitely my passion! Cooking....not so much.

Taking the leap!

Here it is! My very first blog post! Making the decision to finally launch my site was one of the toughest of this journey. After all, there are so many choices, too many, really, and I had to make sure I was making the very best one. Setting up a site is a lot of work! Oh, but it is so worth it. I have so many great photos that I couldn't wait to share with everyone! I was well over due!

I should start by introducing myself. My name is Amanda and I live in Wisconsin, in one of the tiniest towns there is. I grew up here in farm country and have never wanted to live anywhere else. I married my high school sweetheart, Jon, over 10 years ago and we have two beautiful red head boys. They are the cuties featured in this post! They are my life, my inspiration, the reason I get up each morning...very early...every morning.

I took an interest in photography from a young age. I explored it more in high school, learned how to develop film and all that jazz. I didn't pick up a "real" camera until around 2009 when my husband bought me a used one from a friend. I was so intimated by it and took my time learning all the bells and whistles! I've grown so much since then and I continue to learn, every day, through books, blogs and videos, online classes and, most importantly, experience. I am completely self taught and darn proud of it!

I have been so very blessed these last couple of years. I have some amazing friends and family who have allowed me to be the one to take their family portraits. They picked ME! They didn't have to, I didn't pressure them, I didn't even ask them...THEY asked ME. I am so incredibly honored. With living in an age where there seems to be a photographer around every corner, it truly is a blessing to be chosen for such an important job. There is so much work that goes into preparing your family for a photo shoot. From choosing outfits and a location, picking a date and a time. With so many variables, it all needs to fall into place perfectly. Although its been a couple of years already since my family has had our own portrait taken, I do know that its no easy task! To be picked to be the person to coordinate it all and assure the process goes smoothly, means so very much to me.

Each session is unique, just like each family. We spend about an hour together, laughing, giggling, combining ideas, having a blast, all to perfectly capture where they are in their lives right then, in that very second.

Everyone has their own journey, every life is filled with milestones. These are the times we want to remember. I look at photos of my own children, when they were tiny, and I can remember just how I felt in the moment I took that photo, how badly I wanted to remember how their tiny hand could curl around my finger or how they fit perfectly into the crook of my husbands arm. I can remember exactly how mischevious my first born was when I see that one photo with that devilish look in his eye, how happy my second child was as a baby with that big gummy smile. At the time, it seems like they will be that little forever. I know from experience just how fast that time flies and how quickly we forget that there were once our tiny babies. Before you know it, they are getting on the bus and bringing homework home, checking under their pillows for dollars and going on sleep overs. Life is one big fun whirlwind and I don't ever want to forget all these great moments. They are mere moments in time...but I can help you keep these memories forever.
